Pilates in its classic form was designed as a complete, whole body fitness program that strengthens, stretches, and balances the entire body.
At the turn of the 20th century, Joseph Pilates, the inventor of the Pilates Method, changed the world of fitness forever. By combining the Western traditions of sports and exercise with the Eastern philosophies of breathing and mental concentration, he created a new and unique blueprint for healthy living. More than 80 years after its introduction, his methods are recognized worldwide as innovative and effective.
The expansiveness of the Pilates Method, with more than 500 exercises and a variety of supportive apparatus, makes it ideal for people of all age groups and fitness levels, as well as those recovering from injuries or suffering from chronic illnesses. Each exercise emphasizes proper alignment, positioning and breath. As a result, the body is re–introduced to healthy and functional movement patterns designed to reprogram the neuromuscular system and restore youthful natural movement. While emphasis is placed on precision, coordination and an awareness of the body in space, the approach is engaging, challenging and fun.
In addition, much like building a home where the foundation supports the structure, the exercises strengthen the foundational muscles that support the spine, including the deep abdominals, the pelvic floor, the diaphragm, and the lower back muscles – collectively referred to as the 'core' or 'powerhouse' of the body. Core strength, or lack thereof, can affect everything from our posture to our ability to move efficiently. The stress of everyday living eventually takes its toll on us all. From the inactive person to the accomplished athlete we all feel its effect. We suffer from compressed spines, imbalanced musculature and fatigue.
